(GAeF) was founded in 1972 in order to promote all areas of aerosol research, to provide information on an interdisciplinary basis amongst members and the public, to provide an international forum for collaboration and support scientific education and teaching at all levels. The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.


The combination of the most recent developments on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and miniaturized sensors creates unique opportunities to establish rapidly cost-effective observations of the atmospheric column and fill the gap between ground-based and satellite measurements. Thanks to lowering the cost of investment and field operation, new UAV-sensor systems have the potential, yet unexplored, to enhance vertically the geographical coverage of international atmospheric networks and play a critical role in the rigorous quantification of the effect of climate forcers (such as aerosols) on the earth radiation budget and climate.

The Research Assistantship aims to provide innovative solutions to perform cost-effective in-situ profiling of aerosol properties in the first kilometers of the troposphere using UAV-sensor systems. Leveraging prototype developments, this project will qualify and exploit a comprehensive suite of UAV-based sensors enabling the profiling of key aerosol properties.

Postdoctoral Fellowship position in the Aerosol Testing Concepts

Philip Morris International (PMI) has launched a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at our state-of–the-art Science & Innovation (S&I) facilities, based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow you will be developing innovative Aerosol Testing Concepts to understand the distribution of particle phase (PP) vs gas/vapor phase (GVP) for different, mainly liquid droplet aerosols. The application and interpretation of the collected data should create further in depth knowledge about the interactions of the different aerosol constituents with surfaces during aerosol generation, transportation and sampling or exposure in test systems.

PhD position at IRCELYON, France, on molecular-level understanding of organic aerosol precursors in the atmosphere

Within this project, we aim to accurately evaluate the importance of highly oxygenated molecules (HOM), anewly identified group of organic vapors found to be important contributors to SOA, for the formation of new aerosol
particles in the atmosphere. To resolve existing discrepancies in the volatility of the HOM, key components in aerosol growth, we have to experimentally provide the essential structural information to eliminate existing uncertainties.
More specifically, the tasks of the PhD student will be to


(i) determine the molecular structure of these HOM;
(ii) evaluate their volatility and;
(iii) evaluate their contribution to atmospheric aerosol formation and growth.

We seek a talented and ambitious researcher (PhD student) for a project to develop highly sensitive hydrogen sensors using well-defined nanostructured materials prepared by aerosol-based techniques. The successful candidate will be trained to use a range of advanced techniques for synthesizing, characterizing and depositing
aerosolized nanoparticle building blocks, which he/she will then have to utilize to prepare the required nanomaterials for the gas sensors. The synthesized nanoparticle building blocks will differ with respect to composition, size and morphology, thereby providing means to control the properties of the sensing materials, and thus the performance of the final-product sensors.
